Padar Island Sunrise Trek: Timing, Steps, Heat and Footwear

The Padar Island sunrise trek is a short, steep climb of roughly 800 built steps with almost no shade; most visitors reach the main viewpoint over three differently coloured bays in 25–45 minutes. On Ayvara’s 3D2N itinerary it starts at 06:00 on Day 2, inside the park’s first Padar session (05:00–08:00 WITA), and breakfast on board follows at 08:15. Closed shoes with grip (or, at the least, strapped hiking sandals with tread), water, a hat and sunblock are the essentials.

What the Padar Island sunrise trek involves

Padar Island is the third-largest island in Komodo National Park and lies between Komodo and Rinca. Visitors come for one thing: a built staircase up a dry, grassy ridge to a viewpoint where three bays with different sand colours can be seen at once.

On Ayvara’s 3D2N route the climb opens Day 2. The published schedule reads “06:00, trek and photo session on Padar Island”, followed at 08:15 by breakfast on board and the sail to Pink Beach. Timing: why 06:00, and when the sun comes up

Padar lies less than nine degrees south of the equator, so sunrise moves by less than an hour across the year. In local time (WITA, UTC+8) it falls at about 05:30 in mid-November and about 06:15 in mid-July.

A 06:00 start therefore means climbing in first light in the middle of the year, when the sun rises during the ascent, and shortly after sunrise towards the end of the year. The benefit is temperature as much as colour: the staircase has almost no shade, and early morning is the coolest part of the day.

The park’s session system

Since 1 April 2026 the Komodo National Park authority (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo, BTNK) has applied a quota of 1,000 visitors a day and divided Padar trekking into three sessions. As reported by Kompas Travel, the first runs 05:00–08:00 WITA, the second 08:00–11:00, and a third opens at 15:00. Visits are reserved through the park’s SiOra application.

Ayvara’s 06:00 trek falls inside the first session, which closes at 08:00, ahead of the 08:15 breakfast on board. Rules of this kind are set by the government and can change, so the guide’s instructions on the day are the final word on timing. Komodo National Park fees are not included in Ayvara’s rates and follow the regulations in force at the time of the trip.

How hard is the Padar sunrise hike?

Moderate. The route is short and steep, and for most of its length it is a staircase, not a rough trail. Published step counts differ: Komodo Luxury’s Padar guide gives roughly 780–830 built steps, and one Labuan Bajo tour operator counts 838.

Visitors who can climb several flights of stairs with pauses can usually reach the main viewpoint. Guests who would sooner not go all the way can stop at a lower platform; the view opens well before the top.

Viewpoints on the way up

• Lower platforms. The bays come into view well before the top, and the rest platforms make sensible turnaround points for anyone with sore knees.
• Main viewpoint. The photograph most people know: the ridge running away from the camera with crescent bays on either side, one white, one dark volcanic grey and one with a pink tint. The pink comes from red foraminifera fragments mixed into pale sand, the same effect described in the Pink Beach guide.
• Side ridges. Komodo Luxury’s Padar guide notes that additional ridges give other angles on the bays and that the upper sections turn to loose gravel. They are more exposed and need care and proper soles.

Sunrise is a popular time to climb, so expect other groups on the stairs. A guide is included, and participants are required to follow the guide’s instructions throughout the trip.

Footwear: sandals or shoes?

Ayvara’s packing list names hiking sandals. Komodo Luxury’s Padar Island guide goes further and calls closed-toe shoes with grip essential, noting that sandals raise the risk of slipping on the gravel sections.

The two fit together: what matters is a treaded sole and a secured heel. Trainers or trail shoes are the safest choice. A hiking sandal should at least strap at the heel and have a proper tread. Flip-flops and smooth-soled slides do not belong on this staircase, least of all on the way down.

Heat, sun and water

Komodo National Park has one of the driest climates in Indonesia, and Padar’s cover is grass and low scrub: savanna, not forest. In the dry months the hills are straw-coloured; after the rains they turn green. In either season, once the sun clears the ridge there is nowhere to get out of it.

• Carry water up. Mineral water is included on board Ayvara, and Komodo Luxury’s Padar guide advises at least one litre per person.
• Apply sunblock before leaving the boat, and take a hat and sunglasses. All three are on Ayvara’s what-to-bring list.
• Wear light clothing that dries fast. The descent is warmer than the climb.
• Use the en-suite bathroom in the cabin before going ashore, since Komodo Luxury’s Padar guide states there are no toilets on the island.
• A dry bag, also on the what-to-bring list, protects a phone and camera on the way ashore.

Photos and drones

Ayvara’s inclusions list premium documentation with drone, GoPro and mirrorless camera, delivered as raw footage only. The drone permit for Komodo National Park is a separate matter: it is optional, not included in the rate, and must be requested seven days before the trip. Guests who want aerial footage of Padar should raise it with the Komodo Luxury reservations desk when booking.

Where Padar sits in the 3D2N itinerary

Day 1 ends at Kalong Island with sunset and dinner, and flying foxes are often seen from the boat at dusk (see Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong on Day 1). Padar follows at 06:00 the next morning: sunset at Kalong, sunrise at Padar.

Open trip or private boat to Padar

The same sunrise trek is on both. On the 3D2N open (sharing) trip, the 2027 publish rates (rate sheet dated 11 September 2026) are per person, per voyage, by cabin type: Superior IDR 6,750,000 (USD 450), Deluxe IDR 7,750,000 (USD 530) and Master IDR 8,500,000 (USD 570).
