Day 1: Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong

Practical notes for day one

Pick-up. The included transfer is arranged between 8 and 9 a.m. and covers only the Labuan Bajo mainland area near the harbour. Accommodation on other islands or in the Manjaga area is not covered. Guests flying in on the day need a flight that lands in time for the pick-up; arriving the day before is the safer option.

Kelor. The hill is short but steep. Komodo Luxury’s Kelor Island guide describes a slope of loose soil and dry grass with no stairs or shade, about 10 to 20 minutes to the top. The trek slot falls at midday, so bring a hat, sunblock, water and footwear with grip.

Manjarite. This is the first snorkel of the trip. Komodo Luxury’s Manjarite guide describes a sheltered bay with shallow coral that suits beginners. Snorkelling gear and life vests are included in the fare.

Kalong. Nobody lands here: boats anchor offshore and guests watch from the deck. Flying foxes roost in the mangroves by day and usually leave around dusk. Ayvara’s 360° rooftop deck gives a view in every direction. More detail is in the day-one guide to Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong.

Day 2: Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Manta Point and Taka Makassar

Practical notes for day two

Padar. Komodo Luxury’s Padar Island guide lists roughly 780 to 830 built steps, with most visitors reaching the main viewpoint in 25 to 45 minutes, and minimal shade. The top looks over three bays with white, dark and pink-tinted sand. More on the climb is in the Padar Island sunrise trek guide.

Pink Beach. The tint is widely attributed to red fragments of foraminifera shells and organ-pipe coral mixed into white sand. It is subtle and strongest in the wet sand at the waterline. Komodo Luxury’s Pink Beach guide says low-angle morning or late-afternoon light shows the colour best, which suits the 09:00 slot.

Komodo Island. Every visitor walks with a park ranger; independent trekking is not allowed. The dragons are wild, so sightings are usual but not guaranteed. Komodo Luxury’s Komodo Island guide notes that sightings are most frequent in the cooler morning hours, and the 11:30 slot is late morning: carry water and wear a hat.

Manta Point. The site, also called Karang Makassar, is snorkelled as a drift along a shallow reef bank. Komodo Luxury’s Manta Point guide says guides read the tide and set the line, lists confident open-water swimming as the skill needed, and calls sightings highly consistent but never guaranteed. Do not touch the rays, and anyone unsure in open water should tell the guide before getting in.

Taka Makassar. This sandbank shows fully only at low tide, so the amount of sand at 16:30 depends on the tide that day.

Day 3: Sebayur and the sail back

3D2N compared with 2D1N and 4D3N

Ayvara’s open trip runs as 3D2N only, with weekend departures from Friday to Sunday and weekday departures from Monday to Wednesday. Fares are per person, per 3D2N voyage, by cabin type: Superior IDR 6,750,000 (USD 450), Deluxe IDR 7,750,000 (USD 530) and Master IDR 8,500,000 (USD 570). A short Komodo trip of 2D1N from Labuan Bajo, or a longer 4D3N, is sold as a private charter of the whole boat. The main difference between a 3D2N and a 4D3N Komodo boat tour is one more night and one more full day at sea; a 2D1N has a single night on board and correspondingly less time for stops. What is included, and what can change the route

The fare covers the stay on board, meals, mineral water, coffee and tea, a guide, snorkelling gear, life vests, pick-up and drop-off within the Labuan Bajo mainland area near the harbour, and drone, GoPro and mirrorless documentation delivered as raw footage. Komodo National Park fees are not included; they are subject to government regulations at the time of the trip. Crew gratuities, flight tickets, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, personal snacks and personal expenses are excluded too, as is the optional drone permit for the park, which has to be requested 7 days before the trip.
